He was a writer in Czech language, known for his science fiction works. He is known for creating the modern concept of Robots. 

He also wrote many politically charged works, and he also campaigned in favour of free expression and strongly opposed the rise of both fascism and communism in Europe.

He was seven times nominated to the Literature Nobel Prize, but never received it. On the contrary, there are many prizes to honour his name.
