It was published in 1554. It explains the life of a boy, Lazaro of Tormes, in the 16th Century, since he was born and his miserable childhood, to his marriage, when he was an adult.
It is considered to be a precursor to the picaresque novel as it is characterized by its remarkable realism, first-person narative and moralizing and pessimistic ideology.
